What is Web Hosting?

September 19, 2009 by

Web hosting ( sometimes called internet site hosting, Web hosting, and Webhosting ), is the business of housing, serving, and maintaining files for one or more Web sites. More important sites. More important than the PC space that is provided for Internet site files is the fast connection to the Internet. Most hosting services offer connections on T-carrier system lines. Usually , an individual business hosting its own site would require a like connection and it would be dear. Employing a website hosting service lets many firms share the cost of a fast Net connection for serving files.

A number of Net access suppliers, for example America Online, offer customers free space for a small Web site that is hosted by one of their PCs. Geocities is a Web site site that offers registered visitors similar free space for an internet site. Whilst these services are free, they are extremely basic.

A number of website hosting corporations describe their services as virtual hosting. Virtual hosting usually implies that their services will be transparent and that each Web site will have its own domain name and set of email addresses. In most uses, hosting and virtual hosting are synonyms. Some hosting corporations let you have your own virtual server, the appearance that you are controlling a server that is dedicated entirely to your site.

Dedicated hosting is the supply of a dedicated server machine that is devoted to the traffic to your site. Only really busy sites need dedicated hosting. Many firms purchase their own servers and place them on a site that provides fast access to the Net. This practice is called colocation.

    Ok, Website buildling 101.

First of all, a website is really just a collection of files that go into a place everyone can access. When you buy web space, they give you a folder on a computer that only you can add to. You put your documents that are formatted in HTML onto it.

HTML is really a text file that has special links to graphics. Think of an excel document. You can build formulas that link to other cells. A web page is the same think. You link from one picture or page to another.

Your domain name points to that folder and calls up your material.

There are all types of WYSIWYG editors. There are many that are free and simple to use. They give you "What you see is what you get." Pretty much if you can make a text document it formats it into a web page for you.

Then you upload it to your website. Most often you use a program that uses FTP. File transfer protocol. You are given an FTP address that you put into the FTP program and it allows you put the files you created into the folder on the server.

If you look at web pages, you can see the folder structure. for instance yahoo.com points to a specific folder. yahoo.com/games points to a folder inside the yahoo.com folder called games. This way you can build sub pages.

And finally Linux Hosting versus Windows hosting. Windows makes a web server. The person you are renting your folder from could be running windows or linux. The catch is Windows gets their $$ for every little thing. If it uses Linux, it is cheaper (usually) and ironically offers more functionality. You can do things like run small programs on your web pages.

Your price is fair, but you should compare. You are charged for the amount of storage space you use, and the amount of data that is accessed. For instance, let's say you have a picture that is 1Meg. You have to have a website that can hold it (usually you get GIGs of space). Then if 5 people access that file, you have transferred 5Megs worth of data.

So, if you have a simple website with some pictures, the average web hosting service will do fine. But if you want to create the next youtube, you will probably be charged for lots of data, or cut off after you have reached your limit.

Lots of info that I am trying to condense.

The "xexch50" command should only be sent to other Exchange servers within the same Exchange organization. If this is happening when sending to a mail server over the internet, read the following link for information on how to prevent "xexch50" from being sent to mail servers across the internet.
