yes, but nor for a while. There has been discussion about a 1440p, and eventually a 2160p or quad full HD. These will not be mainstream for at least 20 years, and by then we may no longer be using the pixel to watch TV. 1080p is going to be the mainstream like 480i was for so long.
We just do not yet have the bandwidth for anything more than 1080p, we barley have enough bandwidth for that.
Note: Holographic disks with capacities of up to 3 TB will give us enough capacity for movies in 2160p or 1440p but its way too expensive, and the technology is still at least 5 years away.
Buy the new TV, 1080p is here to stay for a while.
