Exotic Choices for Bonsai Gardeners
September 17, 2009 by Hanna08 · 6 Comments
The majority of bonsai gardeners are content with the more common deciduous, confierous, or fruit trees when creating their bonsai tree collection. But, more exotic bonsai varieties are available that permit the bonsai gardener to further develop his or her skills.
One superb alternative to the more frequent style bonsai is Wisteria, a native of Japan, China, and Korea. In the wild, Wisteria can reach 30 feet or more in size. However, since Wisteria doesn’t conform to any of the normal bonsai styles, forming them into a bonsai can be an interesting challenge.
The Wisteria flowers are both aromatic and beautiful and come in a variety of colors, including blue, purple, pink, and white. Flowering in the Spring, they need lots of water with adequate drainage and they do well in any where from full sun to partial shade. Just before they blossom in the spring, you should provide them with a good amount of fertilizer, and once again in late summer before they shed their leaves.
Another option is Orange Jasmine which will provide a delight to the nose and beauty to the eye. Orange Jasmine bears a bright red fruit and fragrant, white blossoms.
Feed Orange Jasmine every three to four weeks starting in early spring and continuing through mid-autumn. Only light watering is adequate for most of the year, with slightly more required in the hotter summer season.
Because they generally do better in moderate shade or filtered sun, Orange Jasmine is one of the few bonsai that can, and should be raised indoors.
The Mimosa tree, also occasionally known as silk trees due to their long silky filaments, provide another good choice. They are as fragrant as both of the two choices mentioned above and their puffy flowers and lacy foliage are also quite lovely.
The Mimosa’s flowers bloom in late April to early July and moderate water should be provided during this period. However, you should avoid getting water on the flowers because, much like a number of other flowering plants, the flowers will quickly deteriorate when wet.
If you choose to cultivate a Mimosa, it will be one of the larger bonsai in your collection since they have large leaves, grow rapidly, and are difficult to maintain at a very small size. So be sure to give then adequate room in your display area.
Another non-traditional bonsai is the Desert Rose. The Desert Rose can turn what would be an ordinary bonsai collection into one full of color and excitement. It is a native of East Africa and in the wild can grow up to 10 feet tall, producing large, pink, trumpet-bowl flowers.
The Desert Rose should be kept outside most of the year as they need ample sunshine and lots of fresh air. With their very bushy growing habit, they will make a good design complement to the many traditional bonsai in your collection.
However, the Desert Rose is sensitive to cold, so they should be brought indoors in cold climates or during periods of cold weather as they will not thrive in temperatures below 10C (50F). With temperatures in the 10C-15C (50F-60F) range, they will lie dormant and healthy and during this period they will need very little water.
You should try your hand at some of these exotic fragrant and beautiful flowering plants to expand your horizon and further develop your bonsai gardening skills. They provide a nice contrast when placed among some of the more standard evergreens, such as, pines, junipers, and firs. Additionally, as they lose their leaves in the fall and bloom in the spring, you’ll have an interesting ever-changing display.

Martial Arts Disciplines: Shotokan Karate
July 21, 2009 by Hanna08 · 2 Comments
Shotokan karate is both a new and an ancient martial art. It is ancient because its roots are deeply entrenched in the past and new because, as it is expressed today, it is an art that is less than one hundred years old. Shotokan is characterized by its long, low stances, its strong techniques and its dynamic forms.
The “founding father” of shotokan, Gichin Funakoshi, was from Okinawa. He studied the most ancient of the Okinawan te (“hand”) systems as a young man and in the early twentieth century brought what he had discovered on the island of Okinawa to mainland Japan, where he demonstrated his art before the Emperor. He intended to return to Okinawa but was convinced to stay and continue instructing in Japan. Funakoshi’s nom de plume was Shoto (which means “waving pines”), and kan means “hall”, so shotokan karate can be translated as, “Shoto’s hall of the way of the empty hand”.
While Funakoshi was the conceiver of shotokan, it was really his son, Yoshitaka Funakoshi who evolved it into the form we know today. It quickly grew in popularity, backed, promoted and regulated by the powerful Japan Karate Association, and before long circulated across the planet.
Shotokan has, produced some of the worlds greatest karate advocates, including Hirokazu Kanazawa. It is believed by many karateka (karate practitioners) that Hirokazu has come closest to having, the most perfect technique. He studied karate at Takushokyu University and won the Japan Championships in 1962, even with a broken hand. Shotokan Carries on and is practiced by thousands of adults and children, throughout the world.
Triads
Shotokan karate is built on the Triads which represent something deep in the human psyche. There exists the Physical Triad – Kihon (basics), Kumite (sparring) and Kata (forms), which require dedicated training and the constant perfecting of technique. This is followed by the Moral triad of justice, mercy and compassion and finally the Ethical Triad of duty, honor and loyalty. If you put all of the nine triad principles together (nine symbolizes perfection) you achieve the whole, rounded person. When these principles are practiced in a martial art they exemplify one of the fundamental concepts of Shotokan karate- focusing on the development of the human character as a whole being, instead of concentrating on only one aspect of development.
Clothing and Equipment
Shotokan karatekas don a white cotton top and drawstring trousers, and due to Karate by its very nature being “open handed” a wide variety of martial arts supplies is not necessary for karatekas.
Rank
At 3rd-dan a karateka may be called “sensei”. At 4th-dan it is understood that the karateka is well familiar with the style and has a deep understanding of the technical essentials. A 5th-dan is awarded after the writing of a technical dissertation on karate. All dan grade awards after 5th are for advancement within shotokan, with emphasis on style, devotion, loyalty and dedication to the art.
With the award of 6th-dan comes the title “shihan’ which freely translated means “master” or literally “a teacher of teachers”. At this stage the karateka is considered a master of his/her style and is given the right to wear the red and white belt or may continue to wear the black belt. Although it may take 30 years of hard, disciplined training and study to achieve 6th-dan, this is reputed to be only the starting point to the pursuit of excellence and true knowledge.
The Importance of Staff Recruitment
July 5, 2009 by Hanna08 · 4 Comments
It is a well known business truism that one bad employee can undo the work of two good employees without even trying! They can be your worst nightmare or they can be almost as valuable to your business as you are and sometimes more so. Controlling them and directing their energies is a demanding and challenging task and one that has baffled and concerned me on more occasions than wish to remember.
The problems with employees are varied, overstaffing, understaffing, disputes, low morale, misdirected enthusiasm, delegation, job suitability, hiring, firing etc.
Right about now you’re thinking “I don’t need employees they’re too much trouble!”. Wrong, if you are going to expand and grow you will eventually need help, employees provide that help. As I have found over the years, some of my employees have saved “my bacon” on more than one occasion and literally can’t do without them.
Many successful companies regard their employees as their most valuable commodity and even some countries will claim their most precious resource is their people, Japan for example. This is a philosophy that you should adopt, because if your customers are treated well by your staff the profits will look after themselves, because remember, it doesn’t matter how cheap you are, if you treat customers badly, you will never see them again. And disgruntled customers have big mouths – remember that.
Again with anything, it requires planning and employees are no different. A staffing plan should consider the following:
- The present and future requirements of the business.
- The business functions required to meet your objectives.
- The number of employees required to perform these functions.
- The type of people needed (skills, qualifications, personality type).
- Where are you going to find these employees (competitors, friends, family, advertise)
- Do the jobs allocated have a practical and worthwhile purpose.
- Can the jobs allocated, be done in a more efficient way.
- Holiday staffing requirements, which employees can go on holiday at the same time without throwing the business into total chaos.
When considering these issues remember you should always find the person to fit the job not the job to fit the person. The trickiest part of employment issues is hiring. One of the main contributors to staff turnover is poor staff selection by employers.
The lesson here is to be careful, be very careful when it comes to selecting the right people and at the same time make yourself aware of the anti-discrimination legislation otherwise you may find yourself on the losing end of a dispute.
I’ve heard that 80% of employers lose these disputes and must pay damages or offer the person the job – great isn’t it? – your idea, your business, your risk, your personal choice., your money and “they” dictate who you can and can’t employ!
Here are a few tips to help you through the “staff selection minefield”:
- Before placing an advertisement, ensure that it is clear and straight to the point as regards experience and job description.
- Leave personal preferences out, don’t mention age, sex, marital status, race or anything like that – it’s not allowed.
- Define the job role on paper stating very clearly the functions to be performed including any menial tasks as these are the ones that seem to cause the most problems. Also, state things like hours and any unusual conditions and experience and/or qualifications required. so there can be no dispute on what was agreed to at the interview. Give a copy to each interviewee.
- Pre-plan the interviews by listing relevant questions to ask each interviewee so you get an “apples v’s apples” comparison.
- Always reference check, ask questions about personality, attitude to work etc.
- One thing I always thought worked well was asking a few technical or test questions. If they were offended by your asking these questions then they should be avoided at all costs as they are probably people who are too tightly wrapped or can’t handle a little pressure and you don’t need employees like that. If they answer the questions and get them wrong they were obviously either nervous or they didn’t know the answer.
- If you think they were nervous give them a little longer and reassure them that being nervous won’t harm their chances at getting the job and this generally produces positive results.
Once you have completed the interviews and made your decision, advise the successful applicant by phone and then send a letter of confirmation with details like salary, starting date, position etc. Also, send each unsuccessful applicant a letter thanking them for applying and for their effort. Courtesy goes a long way to building goodwill within a business.

Stay Young With Fo-Ti
May 26, 2009 by Hanna08 · 4 Comments
Fo ti is also known as He shou wu (in Chinese medicine) and Polygonum multifloru. It is a plant that is native to Japan, Taiwan and China. It is the root of fo ti that is used for medicinal purposes and as a dietary supplement. In traditional Chinese medicine, fo ti is prepared by boiling it in an infusion made with black beans. The result is known as red fo ti, or processed fo ti. Red fo ti is thought to act as a tonic that improves energy and vitality, and is also thought to fortify the blood, liver and kidneys. The raw and unprocessed root is known as white fo ti.
Fo-ti was first recorded in Chinese medicine in 713 AD during the Tang dynasty. He shou wu, translates to Chinese as “black-haired Mr. He”. The name comes from an old Chinese legend. The story goes that an old villager called Mr. He was 58 and had been unable to father a child. He took fo ti on a regular basis after taking advice from a monk. The story goes that taking the root restored his youthful appearance (including his black hair) and his vitality. He was also able to father numerous children.
Fo-ti is the dried or cured root of a twining vine in the knotweed family, mostly found throughout China, except in the extreme northeast. It is also occasionally grown in American gardens as an ornamental. Ask Chinese herbalists about “fo-ti” and they would not know what you’re talking about because of its Chinese name he-shou-wu. The name was given to the plant by a marketer in the early 1970s for the American herb business.
In Chinese medicine the dried (unprocessed) root and the cured (processed) root are considered two different herbs. The unprocessed root is used to relax the bowels and detoxify the blood. The processed root is used to strengthen the blood, invigorate the liver and kidneys, and supplement vital energy (qi). Processed fo-ti is one of the more widely used tonics in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which employs it to enhance longevity, increase vigor, and promote fertility. It is also an ingredient in TCM formulas for premature gray hair, low back pain, angina pectoris, low energy, and other conditions.
Fo ti herb is available in capsule and tablet forms at your local or internet health food store. Always look for name brands like Solaray, Now foods, and Natures Way to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase.

I-20 Visas

How to study in the United States as a Foreign Student
So you want to study at a university in the United States, but you are a citizen of another country. Students from countries such as Korea, Japan, China, India, and others regularly study in the United States by obtaining a visa from a school that is authorized to issue I-20 visas. I-20 visas are what allow foreign students to study in the United States legally.
One question to consider early on is whether you wish to apply to a United States university directly from the high school in your country, or whether you wish to attend a college preparatory (high school) in the United States. A major benefit of attending college prep in the United States is that they often already have built strong relationships with the university you wish to attend. For example, the University of California system, in many cases, has already pre-approved transferrable courses at high schools accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges). Such high schools are already familiar with the admission requirements of various universities, as well.
When looking at high schools in the United States, you should make sure that their affiliations connect them with top tier universities. But more importantly, you need to make sure that the high school you are considering is authorized to issue I-20 visas to foreign students.
Becoming authorized to issue I-20 visas to foreign students is a process managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It requires a lengthy review of the school petitioning for approval, so be sure the school you are considering has already obtained this approval before spending much time on their application process.
Spending an extra four years at a United States private college prep school, can pay off big time when it comes to getting into top Universities.
