Machine Shopping

January 11, 2010 by · 3 Comments

When a machine shop is looking for a new machine, they should try to find a provider that can offer everything they need. These companies should offer a double mitre saw, double miter saw, copy router, profile cutting machine, elumatec saw, tekna usa, and emmegi usa.

Top software to pair with the machines provided is also a must. Every profile cutting machine needs some type of software in order to run. A new, great type of software is Mesoft. The Mesoft software is a CAD/CAM package designed to be used in conjunction with Mecal CNC Machining Centers.

The Mesoft software allows the user to import DXF files of their profiles. After importing the profile the user can select the surface on which they would like to place the machining operations. Through a menu system they can select the type of machining they would like to perform, keyhole, pocket, slot, drill or a special form of their own want.

There is no reason to go to a number of different manufacturers for different machines when there is the possibility of getting them all from one provider. A company that has over 30 years of experience in machine tool building for the window and door industry is a good place to start looking.

If they have delivered over 28,000 machines to virtually every corner of the globe, that can also be a plus. They should also be based in the USA. If they are just a North American Partner and have over 25 years experience servicing and selling European equipment in North America that is also ok.

Milfoil Weevil as a Barrier to Invasive Milfoil

October 2, 2009 by · 2 Comments

The milfoil weevil is a tiny, specialized marine insect native to North America that  might have some very positive effects for mankind and local ecosystems. This stems  from the fact that it only eats milfoil and is harmless to humanity).

Two sorts of milfoil exist in the United States. There is a  indigenous one and an invasive species of Eurasian milfoil. The indigenous species places no threat but the Eurasian strain is very damaging. Eurasian Milfoil is the reason the milfoil weevil is so significant.

Eurasian Milfoil (the primary milfoil that will be referenced from  this point on) probably came to The Us between the 1800’s and the 19404’s as an unwanted  passenger on some large ship. Because of its ability to travel on ship anchors,  bottoms, and propellers it spread widely, bringing with it drastic ecological shifts and  extra problems for humanity.   Thankfully the milfoil weevil can be spread the same way.

This water plant grows  quickly, devastating local plants and limiting the food and living area for many marine  beasts.   Milfoil mats decrease the oxygen in the water, which  can threaten fish and cause unhealthy algae growth.

The milfoil is more annoying for humans than harmful because it can lose weight  the amount of water available for yachting, fishing, bathing and waterskiing.  For communities, the dense mats can clog water intakes or overflows, causing water shortfalls in some places and flooding in others.   The mats can be specially destructive to dams by breaking or clogging generators and  reducing electricity output.

One little weevil could hold the solution to  the milfoil dilemma.  The fact that it is native favors Eurasian milfoil over indigenous  milfoil, and kills the colonies step by step, giving indigenous species time to recover, make  this the ideal. Coupled with a high breeding rate, the  weevil is the safe and ideal solution to the milfoil problem. When taking into account how quick the milfoil spreads, it is obvious that weevils are the perfect answer to controlling the problem.

This water plant spread quickly because broken pieces can sink to the bottom and easily form new floras. Marine  harvesting devices are not productive because they break the flora and pieces come off and  replant themselves elsewhere. Vacuum dredging works a little better because no broken parts are left behind, but at  the same time the vacuum disrupts the water and may leave no flora life at the bottom.

With a taste for Eurasia milfoil rather than the indigenous milfoil, the weevil eats the flora  from the inside out, ultimately destroying the whole flora. With only thirty days  to live, the milfoil weevils will go through three generations before coming ashore for  the winter. The weevils do have wings, but have never been seen flying, so whether they swim or fly ashore will remain a mystery.   The weevils are hearty small bugs and once they are  introduced to an area, they can survive the harshest weather.

Northern Pike Fishing In Saskatchewan

March 25, 2009 by · 5 Comments

Fishing for pike remains a popular angling venture throughout most of North America.  Of course, there are certain regions of the continent that are more conducive for catching prized trophy pike than others.  In particular, northern pike fishing in Saskatchewan is among the best destinations for someone looking for an exciting fishing adventure. The northern pike is a fighter when it is hooked.  When you consider the size of the pike caught in the Saskatchewan area, you will definitely be in for a huge fight!

Catching a northern pike is not a random event. Simply throwing out “any old” lure or live bait will not necessarily guarantee you will catch something.  The process is a deliberate one and that is why it is helpful to understand a few common tips about catching northern pike in the lakes of Western Canada. Actually, the vast majority of the lakes in this part of Canada are known for their pike population with some lakes having a larger population than others.  But, in order to catch the pike, you need those aforementioned tips.

You can split the way to catch northern pike into two spheres: using lures and using live bait.  Are you considering using a lure when embarking on northern pike fishing in Saskatchewan? If so, there are a great many lures to choose from. Surprisingly, many of the same lures used for bass are used to catch northern pike. This means the lures include jigs, spinners, spoon, poppers, and top water lures. Which one should you use? It will depend on a number of factors. The season of the year will often play a large role in selecting a particular type of lure.   Spoons, for example, are used to mimic a wounded minnow. These make it a great choice when pike are hungry. However, when the pike are not into eating, a spinner can agitate the pike into striking the lure. Once again, the lure you select will be based on a number of factors. That is why it is always helpful to look into which lure is working during particular times of the year.

Live minnows or fish are not legal bait in Saskatchewan. However, if you want to use live leaches or worms it is still legal and a number of fishermen who swear by it.  Place the live bait on a wire leader and hook it through the nose. This will allow the bait to wiggle freely and attract the game fish in the area. Dead bait is usually avoided, however, except for the spawning season.

Landing a northern pike can be a little tricky. Because of the size of the pike, trying to pull it out of the water with your rod could prove self-defeating as the line or rod may outright snap. As such, it is best to land the pike with a net. This will ensure the chances of actually landing the pike as opposed to seeing it get away.

History of Mistletoe

History of Mistletoe

The mistletoe, native to the forests of Northern Europe, is a parasite implant on deciduous and evergreen trees which produces yellowish flowers and waxy white berries. Its closest relative in North America has yellowish flowers and waxy white berries, and is also commonly known as mistletoe. Notably, it is the official floral emblem of the State of Oklahoma.

The name mistletoe came about from two Anglo – Saxon words: mistel which means dung and tan which means twig. And so, mistletoe quite literally means dung on a twig. Mistletoe infers that life can spring up from dung. This leeching plant grows and thrives on the dung of birds on the branches of trees. As a result, mistletoe became the symbol of vivacity and fertility.

The Christmas and New Year tradition of embracing for the bashful and kissing for the brazen under a sprig of mistletoe dates back to olden Britain. Also, it was prevalent among the Druids who were the learned class of the Celts.

The Druids celebrated the beginning of winter ( winter solstice ) by collecting mistletoe and burning it as a sacrifice to their pagan gods. To ensure a year of good faith, peace, and familial harmony, they hung sprigs of mistletoe around their homes. Twigs of the evergreen displayed visibly outside their homes welcomed relatives, friends, neighbors and weary travelers and the mistletoe within encouraged them to embrace shamelessly. Feuding parties or foes who happened to meet under trees that contained mistletoe were required to lay aside their weapons and settle their differences.

The Druids believed that the mistletoe had healing properties. It was often prescribed for female infertility and as an antidote for poisons of all kinds. The gathering of mistletoe was a ceremony by the highest priests using gold knives. Such a carefree rite of harvesting mistletoe is dramatically portrayed in Bellinis opera Norma.

The Celtic Druids were not the only people who ascribed so many marvelous attributes to the mistletoe, the Scandinavians, who called it mistilteinn; also believed that it was the plant of peace, the plant of hope and the plant of harmony. The Scandinavian lore claims that the mistletoe belonged to Frigga, the Scandinavian star of inclination, and the embracing and kissing custom is thought to have come from this notion.

Mistletoe was also used for a decorative green in the Roman Empire during their feasts of Natalis Solis Invicti and Saturnalia. Due to its ties to idolatrous festivities, the Church banned the use of mistletoe when Christmas on December 25 was officially recognized as the birth of Christ in the the fourth century.

As an alternative to the mistletoe, the holly was ironically proposed even thought it too had strong associations with atheist rituals. Nevertheless, the hollys white flowers were to signify the purity of Christ, the acerbic leaves were to symbolize the thorns in Christs crown and the red berries as drops of His blood. Thus, the Holly became a Nativity tradition, but, surprisingly enough, the churchs ban on mistletoe which was in effect throughout the Middle Ages still persists today.
